At the end of August, Amazon rolled out an update to the Kindle Oasis that closed a Libby loophole that allowed extended borrowing. More importantly, it also strengthened the platform’s DRM, making it even tougher for users to back up their books to other devices. For some users, like my colleague Dhruv, this is the last straw.

Google’s New E-Book AI Feature: What It Can Do for Readers

The feature, called Expert Intelligence, lets readers ask questions about a book, create study material, hear AI audio summaries, and explore key ideas in new formats. Google announced the feature on August 27, 2026, with access to more than 100,000 books. The supplied writing guide calls for clear subheads, direct language, strong openings, and one clear idea per paragraph.

Amazon Hikes Hardware Prices, Blaming Memory Shortage

The PocketBook Q wants to be the e-reader you carry everywhere

PocketBook is ditching its classic wider designs for a tall, 5.84-inch e-reader that fits in your pocket. It has physical page-turn buttons that pair with a Linux-based OS that skips notifications, feeds, and scrolling-focused apps. PocketBook says the e-reader’s adaptive SMARTlight adjusts brightness and color temperature throughout the day.

OverDrive Appoints Liz Carrasco CTO

Carrasco succeeds former CTO Jeff Sterling, who is moving into a new leadership position as head of OverDrive Labs. An OverDrive spokeswoman told PW that in his new role Sterling will “continue to provide strategic technical guidance while focusing on high-value research and development initiatives, emerging technologies, and key innovation projects.”
